We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in sheet metal housings to join our design team. In this role, you will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and developing robust and efficient housings to accommodate electronic equipment in various form factors.

Your expertise will encompass sheet metal processes, ensuring designs meet technical requirements, quality standards, and manufacturability. Additionally, you will oversee high-level BOM management to facilitate efficient procurement of components. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be essential to deliver innovative and high-quality designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop sheet metal housings for electronic equipment, considering various form factors and application requirements.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software to illustrate design concepts and communicate design intent.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and structural analysis to ensure designs meet mechanical requirements, including strength, stiffness, and thermal management.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to integrate electronic components, PCBs, and wiring harnesses into the housing designs, considering factors such as EMC, thermal dissipation, and cable management.
  • Optimize designs for manufacturability, considering sheet metal fabrication processes (e.g., laser cutting, bending, welding).
  • Oversee high-level BOM management, ensuring accurate documentation of components, materials, and suppliers to support efficient procurement and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead design reviews and provide constructive feedback to enhance the overall design quality and manufacturability.
  • Support prototyping and testing activities, including the creation of prototypes and evaluation of design performance against specifications.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to develop assembly processes and procedures, ensuring efficient production at scale.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in sheet metal design and enclosure standards to continuously improve design methodologies and techniques.

Required Competences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Proven experience (5 years) in mechanical design, with a focus on sheet metal design for electronic equipment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.) for 3D modeling and 2D drafting, with experience in designing sheet metal components.
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes (e.g., laser cutting, bending, welding).
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles, structural analysis, and thermal management for sheet metal housings.
  • Experience in designing and understanding molding techniques for plastic housings is considered a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in high-level BOM management, ensuring accurate documentation of components, materials, and suppliers for both sheet metal and plastic housings.
  • Leadership experience, with the ability to lead design teams, conduct design reviews, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong problem-solving mindset and a passion for innovation in mechanical design.

Sound interesting, but Lumi-who?

Luminex Network Intelligence is a manufacturer of data distribution equipment for lighting, audio and video solutions in the professional entertainment industry. We develop multiple devices to set up a large AV network without any IT knowledge. As a pioneer in the relatively young application of show-control data networks, we managed to become a respected brand in the international AV industry over the past 15 years. Our devices are being used to build the backbone for a rock solid and fully redundant network on big shows such as the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, the opening ceremony of the Sotsji Winter Games, Glastonbury festival, multiple concerts at Madison Square Garden and world tours of multiple super stars like Robbie Williams, Muse, Coldplay, Adele and Beyoncé.
